Topic: SINGING... STUDY: SINGING CAN MAKE YOU HAPPIER If you’re living with mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, a study, published in the British Medical Journal, suggests singing with a vocal group or choir can help make you happier. Researchers from England’s University of East Anglia say they found those who participate in community singing were able to improve or at least maintain their mental health. They found that the combination of singing and socializing with a group of people can play an important role in recovering from anxiety and depression because it boosts feelings of belonging and wellbeing. The researchers spent six months interviewing and conducting focus groups with participants of the Sing Your Heart Out project, a Norfolk County England based organization that provides group singing sessions and other social events. Professor Tom Shakespeare from UEA led the research. “We found that singing as part of a group contributes to people’s recovery from mental health problems. The format is also different to a therapy group because there’s no pressure for anyone to discuss their condition. We heard the participants calling the initiative a ‘life saver’ and that it ‘saved their sanity’. But the key thing for everyone was that the Sing Your Heart Out model induced fun and happiness.” 1. Topic: COFFEE... STUDY: COFFEE IMPROVES FOCUS BUT NOT CREATIVITY Caffeine – a chemical found in coffee, tea, chocolate and other foods – can improve focus, but it does not make you more creative, according to a University of Arkansas study. University of Arkansas researchers asked two groups of 44 people to answer several problem-solving and creative thinking questions. Before answering the questions, the first group was given a 200-milligram caffeine pill, which is about equal to a strong cup of coffee, while the second group was given a pill that did not have any caffeine. The researchers found that the first group was better at problem-solving, which requires focusing for long periods of time. However, both groups did equally well at creative thinking. This may come as a surprise, says study author Darya Zabelina, since in many cultures, caffeine is often associated with creative jobs. For example, "writers and their coffee" or "programmers and their energy drinks," says Zabelina. In the study, caffeine did not seem to improve memory either. However, the first group did report feeling happier, which shows that caffeine may improve mood. Other studies have found that caffeine can improve weight loss and may even reduce people's risk of developing some illnesses. However, you should be careful not to drink too many cups of tea or coffee, as too much caffeine can cause dehydration, headaches and other health problems. 1. Do you remember the first time you tried coffee? If so, what did you make of it? 2. Do you drink coffee every day? If so, does it help you focus? If not, why not? 3. Do you know any coffee addicts? Who's the biggest coffee addict you know? How many cups do they usually have per day? If so, please describe them. 4. Do you like energy drinks? If so, do you have a favorite? If not, why not? 5. Is coffee more popular than tea where you live? Why do you think that is? 6. Have you ever worked in a cafe? If so, did you enjoy it? If not, would you like to? 7. What are your favorite cold drinks? Why do you like them? See More
